A natural ingredient to help with Long Covid fatigue
…and bonus effects on blood flow and platelet activation
Back in the October, I wrote an article on “What causes Fatigue in Long Covid?”.
Today, I want to follow up with information on a natural ingredient that can help with the specific fatigue that happens in Long Covid - what I call “Long Covid fatigue”.
As a quick reminder:
“Normal fatigue” is typically caused by doing too much (exercise, outdoors activities, even just running around chasing the kids), not sleeping well, not eating well, or not being active enough (Netflix binges are so exhausting!). It’s a temporary situation and energy can be restored by recuperating and taking better care of ourselves (eating right, hydrating, exercising, etc.).
“Long Covid fatigue” is thought to be caused by poor oxygen delivery to the tissues. The scientific term for this is hypoxia.
The hypothesis is that in Long Covid, microclots block up the capillaries and prevent/reduce oxygen delivery to the muscles and tissues, and this causes the fatigue that people with Long Covid feel.
So the Long Covid fatigue that we want to address is caused by poor oxygen delivery as a result of microclots.
To find a natural ingredient that would help with hypoxia-induced fatigue, I started thinking about and searching through known supplements that improve blood flow, tissue oxygenation, and energy, BUT without acting as a stimulant (like caffeine).
And I found a widely-used, proven, all natural ingredient that actually meets this criteria: Beet Root Extract.
Beet Root Extract is usually taken by people that are working out and lifting weights, because it helps with blood flow and blood vessel dilation, and as a result increases tissue oxygenation and energy when exercising.
While somewhat unconventional, these are exactly the effects we are looking for to treat Long Covid fatigue.
Beet Root Extract exerts these effects because it is a rich source of natural, healthy nitrates. The nitrates from the Beet Root Extract are converted to nitric oxide (NO) in vivo. NO acts as a vasodilator, opening up the blood vessels and increasing blood flow. This in turn boosts oxygen delivery to tissues and increases energy & stamina.
We also get three other positive effects as a bonus with Beet Root Extract:
Beet Root Extract has high levels of antioxidants
Beet Root Extract has high levels of anti-inflammatory agents
The NO produced by Beet Root Extract is also a platelet activation inhibitor!!! So we are getting the additional benefit of decreasing microclot formation!
And because it’s natural and addresses blood flow & tissue oxygenation, it won’t cause insomnia or the other negative effects seen with treatments for “normal” fatigue, most of which are stimulants (caffeine for example).
I’m hoping that having a natural ingredient to help with Long Covid fatigue will really help people in their daily life and give them more energy on their Road to Recovery from Long Covid.
